Notes / Concept

A model of Hokulea built from LEGO® Bricks
This model reinterprets a traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe using modern brick-based media. Just as the real Hokulea carries traditional navigation techniques into the future, this LEGO version expresses the journey from the past toward an unseen future.

Mini-Figures
Mini-Figures are equally male and female with simplified faces, inviting children to imagine themselves as part of the crew.

Wave Design
Inspired by real catamaran wakes, emphasizing forward motion and purposeful travel.
This is it! Not the imaginary waves people often make—this is what the waves actually look like when you’re looking down from my yacht.”  — A museum visitor

Hidden Treasure Chest
A small treasure at child-eye level, encouraging young visitors to explore and discover.
Dad! A treasure chest!” — A child visitor at the museum

Design Approach
After closely studying photos and reference materials of the Hokulea, I translated its details into minifigure scale using digital tools. When considering what makes Hokulea unmistakably itself, I identified the upward-pointing bow and stern as its defining features. Focusing on these elements allowed the model to capture the vessel’s distinctive silhouette even at a small scale. Although I had never designed a ship before, once the bow structure was established, the rest of the hull followed naturally.

Evaluation

Timeline Challenge: I took on this project with only three weeks until the deadline, prioritizing completion over perfecting every detail.

Cultural Impact: The reinterpretation of Hawaiian and Polynesian culture received a strong response. A local friend said, “Thank you for respecting our culture—it really moved me.”

Public and Media Response: The museum repeatedly featured my model of Hokulea in news articles and press releases. Even the crew of the actual Hokulea contacted me with questions about the assembly instructions.

Personal Growth: At the time, I had just moved from Japan to Hawaii and was adjusting to cultural and language differences. This project helped me connect with the local community and learn valuable lessons in cultural sensitivity.
