A model of ʻIolani Palace built from LEGO® Bricks
This LEGO model reimagines ʻIolani Palace, the residence of Hawaii’s last monarch Queen Liliʻuokalani, through a contemporary brick medium.
It is designed not only to reflect the architectural detail of the palace, but also to serve as an educational tool that helps visitors engage with its historical and cultural significance, offering a tangible way to experience the presence and legacy of the Queen.
Design Motivation
The 2019 production of the Hokulea model for the Bishop Museum, praised for its cultural authenticity, inspired me to focus on historical landmarks.
ʻIolani Palace was chosen for its significance to the local community and its distinctive architecture suitable for LEGO. The design was completed digitally in 2019 using tools such as Mechabricks, but physical construction was delayed due to time and budget constraints. The model was finally completed in 2026 for exhibition at the Bishop Museum.
Color Tones
Colors were selected to reflect the palace’s appearance under varying lighting conditions. Rather than capturing a single moment, the palette presents a balanced and representative visual impression.
Monochrome Façade
The predominantly monochrome façade emphasizes depth and architectural details through lighting contrast, allowing viewers to appreciate the structure from every angle.
Palm trees placed along the front of the palace allow visitors to experience approaching the building through the trees, enhancing the sense of scale and immersion.
Modular Design / Assembly
To facilitate transportation and installation at the museum, the model was built in modular sections. Each module can be safely disassembled and reassembled, maintaining both structural stability and visual accuracy.
The assembly process is showcased in a time-lapse video.
Evaluation / Recognition
The model drew the attention of the museum’s Exhibit Director, leading to a commission to create the Hawaiian Hall Complex building. The Exhibit Director also mentioned that the model may be considered for future museum lending programs, reflecting its recognized value and quality.
